SOUTH AFRICA’S ULTIMATE HIKE
Monte-aux-Sources to Bushmans’ Nek, 220kms. A spectacular end to end hike through high mountains on the border of Lesotho and South Africa. Summiting Mafadi, 3452m, the highest peak in SA and Thabana Ntlenyana 3482m, the highest peak south of Kilimanjaro.
The Grand Traverse is run on a 12.5 day structure. It starts by meeting at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge on a Tuesday night. The hiking starts on the next day. It is then 7 days to the top of Langibelele Pass, (Tuesday), where a group of porters hikes up with more food and fuel. It is then another 3 days to Sani Top at the end of day 10, (Friday) where more supplies are brought up the pass by 4×4 vehicle. Here there is backpacker accommodation, hot showers, a bar and restaurant. Dinner is included in the guiding fee. An early start on day 11 and two days are spent hiking to the top of Thamathu Pass. Day 13 ends at about 11am at Bushman’s Nek.
This is a very hard hike! Hiking is mostly off-trail, through high, undulating mountains. You need to be very fit and strong and able to hike with a full backpack for up to 8 hours a day. Good mental strength is essential. Porters can only carry about 12kgs of clients hiking equipment and food. That means clients still carry a backpack of about 12kgs at least. You will see wild animals including antelope, baboons and the rare Bearded Vulture. We also visit a colony of Cape vultures. Nights are spent in either a caves or small mountain tents. Passports are needed.
Giant’s Castle
A 2 or 3 day hike up a major mountain that forms a corner stone of the Drakensberg. It starts and ends at 1680m with the highest point at 3314m. The total distance is 34kms to summit and back.
The hiking is mostly on trail through high mountains. You need to be fit and strong and able to hike with a full backpack for up to 6 hours a day. You will see wild animals including antelope, baboons and the rare Bearded Vulture. We stay in small mountain tent
