Mnweni Circuit…

The Mnweni Circuit is a demanding three-day trek through some of the most rugged wilderness in the northern Drakensberg. This route offers a raw and authentic mountain experience, combining river valleys, steep ascents, and dramatic passes.

  • Day One: The journey begins with a hike into the Mnweni area, where the first night is usually spent camping beside the Mnweni River. The setting is remote and tranquil, with the sound of flowing water and towering cliffs framing the campsite.
  • Day Two: The trail intensifies with a strenuous climb up Mnweni Pass. The reward for this effort is an overnight stay in Ledger’s Cave, a natural rock shelter perched high in the mountains, offering sweeping views and a true wilderness atmosphere.
  • Day Three: The final stretch is a long, steep descent down Rockeries Pass, a dramatic route that winds through towering rock formations before returning to the valleys below.

This circuit is not for the faint-hearted; it demands fitness, resilience, and a love of untamed landscapes. In return, hikers are rewarded with solitude, breath-taking scenery, and an unforgettable immersion in the Drakensberg’s wild heart.

Cleft Peak…

The Cleft Peak hike is one of the most spectacular journeys in the Drakensberg, leading to one of its highest summits. This demanding route combines dramatic passes, breath taking views, and a night spent in one of the most iconic caves in the range.

  • Day One: The adventure begins with a steep ascent up Camel Pass, a rugged trail that winds its way to the edge of the Lesotho plateau. The night is usually spent in Roland’s Cave, a dramatic rock shelter perched high above the valleys, offering unmatched views of the Cathedral Peak range and the surrounding escarpment.
  • Day Two: An early start takes hikers to the summit of Cleft Peak, one of the highest points in the Drakensberg. Standing here, you are rewarded with sweeping panoramas across both South Africa and Lesotho, a true highlight of the trek.
  • Day Three: The descent follows Tseke Pass, a long and challenging route that drops steeply back into the valleys below, completing a circuit that showcases the raw grandeur of the northern Drakensberg.

This hike is both strenuous and rewarding, demanding fitness and resilience, but offering unforgettable experiences: sleeping in a legendary cave, standing atop one of the range’s highest peaks, and traversing some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in southern Africa.

Devil’s Knuckles

The Devil’s Knuckles Circuit is a remote and exhilarating hike in the far southern Drakensberg, renowned for its sense of isolation and wide-open wilderness. This circular route is ideal for hikers who crave untouched landscapes, dramatic rock formations, and nights spent in natural shelters beneath the stars.

  • Day One: The trek begins with a steady approach into the Knuckles area, where hikers settle into one of the region’s beautiful rock shelters for the night. These caves provide both protection and a unique wilderness atmosphere, with sweeping views of the valleys below.
  • Day Two: The highlight of the journey is the ascent of the middle knuckle, the most striking of the three peaks. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with panoramic vistas across the southern Drakensberg and into Lesotho, a breath taking reminder of the raw grandeur of this mountain range.
  • Day Three: The circuit continues with a descent through rolling valleys and rugged terrain, completing a loop that showcases the wild beauty of the Knuckles region.

This hike is less travelled than many northern Drakensberg routes, making it perfect for those seeking solitude and immersion in pristine mountain wilderness. With its combination of dramatic summits, rock shelters, and expansive views, the Devil’s Knuckles Circuit offers an unforgettable adventure in one of the most remote corners of the Drakensberg.
