His work has primarily focused on incidents involving zip-lines and abseils, many of which resulted in serious injury or death.

The majority of these cases have been civil disputes involving commercial adventure companies, where Gavin’s role was to analyse how accidents occurred and to establish responsibility. His impartial, evidence-based assessments have been critical in helping courts understand the technical and procedural aspects of adventure activities.

Gavin holds the prestigious NQF Level 8 Mountaineering Guide qualification as well as the MTS Mountaineering Instructor Award, underscoring his advanced technical knowledge and instructional expertise. In addition, he has been actively involved in mountain rescue since 1992, serving as head of rescue operations for 17 years — a role that demanded leadership, precision, and the ability to make life-saving decisions under pressure.
