Terminology

Tree-climbing spikes – spikes that strap onto the side of a climber’s leg.

Connecting ladders – ladders that connect together to reach into the tree.

Tree-Bicycle- a set of two devices that strap onto the tree and act as steps.

Abseil – the technique of sliding down a fixed rope using a belay/abseil device such as a Figure “8”. Also known as Rappelling.

Climbing rope – the Dynamic rope used to catch a falling climber.

Harness – the nylon straps used around the climber’s legs and waist.

Karabiner – snap link used to join ropes, slings or harnesses together.

Sling – nylon straps of various lengths used for connecting the rope to the tree.

Belay plate – hand operated belay device though which the rope passes, used to a arrest a fall.

Prussic knot – a knot made in a short length of accessory cord used for extra safety when abseiling.

Shunt – a mechanical device which does the same as a prussic knot or it can be used as a personal belay device.

Figure “8” – a device used to create friction on the rope during an abseil.

Belay – any anchor point.

Belayer – the person who holds the rope to arrest a fall.

Running belay – anchor points placed as the climber moves higher up the tree.

Grigri – a belay device that works automatically to arrest a fall.

Lory- a belay device that works automatically to arrest a fall.

Friction-hitch- a sliding knot that can be used to arrest a fall.
